Somali Disability Empowerment Network (SODEN) has condemned the murder of head of persons with disabilities in Baidoa.
The chairperson of persons with disabilities, Shariif Jiis in Baidoa shot dead at his home on Tuesday night.
The militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the killing accusing Jiis of spying for Somali police.
In a statement, SODEN said it is deeply saddened by the brutal killing of Sharif who was a wheelchair user.
Sharif has been a very key prominent human rights activist who actively advocated for the rights of people with disabilities in the Southwest State of Somalia.
He lived in one of the IDP camps in Baidoa town when the terrorist group, Al-Shabaab killed while he was at home with his family.
“Any brutal act of terrorism against people with disabilities is an attack against humanity. On behalf of all people with disabilities in Somalia and Human rights defenders, we strongly condemn this killing of this innocent man who never worked with government entities unless advocating for the rights of individuals with disabilities,” the group said.
The group said any act of terror against people with disability will not hinder strategy in advocating for the rights of people with disabilities.
