Somalia’s Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education is planning to recruit 4,000 new teachers, completing the government’s national target of hiring 10,000 teachers.
The planned recruitment follows consultations between the Federal Ministry of Education and education ministries from Somalia’s Federal Member States.
The government has already recruited 6,000 teachers in 2023 and 2024, with the new intake expected to bring the total number recruited under the programme to 10,000.
The new teachers are expected to expand access to basic education, particularly in rural communities and areas recently recovered from armed groups, where shortages of qualified teachers remain a major challenge.
The ministry also aims to reduce the number of children excluded from formal education, strengthen implementation of the national curriculum and improve the quality of teaching across the country.
The recruitment plan, however, comes amid an ongoing disagreement between the Federal Government and Puntland over participation in the national teacher recruitment programme.
Officials will also face the challenge of ensuring that the newly recruited teachers receive adequate training and are deployed to areas with the greatest need.
If successfully implemented, the recruitment of the additional 4,000 teachers could help expand schools, improve education services and provide more Somali children with access to quality basic education.
