Somalia’s Cabinet has received a report on the country’s National Identity Mark as ministers reviewed security, economic affairs and government performance during their weekly meeting in Mogadishu.
The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Thursday, included a presentation on the National Identity Mark, although the government did not immediately provide further details on its content or the next steps following the briefing.
The Cabinet also received detailed security updates from the ministries of Internal Security and Defence on the situation across the country.
The ministries reported that Somali forces had made gains in recent operations against al-Shabaab in parts of the country, including killing several of the group’s commanders involved in planning attacks against civilians.
They also reported an increase in the number of Al-Shabaab members who had surrendered or been captured during the military operations.
The security briefing comes as the federal government continues to prioritise military operations against al-Shabaab and strengthen the capacity of Somali forces to lead the fight against the militant group.
The Cabinet also reviewed reports on the state of the economy and the performance of government ministries as part of its regular oversight of national priorities.
The government gave no further details on the National Identity Mark following Thursday’s meeting, leaving its intended use and implementation timeline unclear.
