In a press freedom day, the president of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo promised not to tolerate infringement against press freedom and vowed to decriminalize journalism last month.
“Congrats to Somali journalists on World Press Freedom Day. Journalism is a noble profession & Penal Code of 1964 will be reformed to ensure it is not used against journals. My administration fully supports the decriminalization of journalism & free expression through legal reform” said in a statement president Farmajo.
Gurbiye was arrested on April 14th 2020 after he responded to a police summons to appear at the Hodan Police Station in Mogadishu.
The Human Right Groups called the Somalia authorities to give back Gurbiye’s freedom for many times but non has been made about the statement.
