Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has secured a decisive victory in the Democratic primary for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, capturing more than 80 percent of the vote.The win clears her path to once again become the Democratic Party’s nominee for the mid term election in November 2026.
The district, which encompasses the city of Minneapolis, is widely regarded as one of the most heavily Democratic constituencies in Minnesota and across the United States.
Ilhan, who has represented the district in Congress since 2018, faced a competitive field of challengers including Julie T. Le, Abena McKenzie, Latonya Reeves, and Nate Schluter.
The victory is particularly significant for Omar, whose political campaign has long centered on issues including immigration, civil rights, and U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.
Election data shows she received overwhelming support from voters across the district, while reports also highlight that she ran her campaign without backing from AIPAC, the influential pro-Israel lobbying organization that holds considerable sway over American policy.
This factor made her campaign especially notable, as Omar has been an outspoken critic of Israeli government policies and the war in Gaza.
While Tuesday’s primary marked a critical first step, Omar will still need to prevail in the November general election to retain her seat in Congress.
