The Gambia government said on Friday that 70 children have died of severe kidney damage, which is believed to have been caused by cough syrup made in India.
The President of the Gambia, Adama Barrow, announced this news at an emergency meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers held on Thursday in which they were discussing how to deal with this situation, according to a press release from the presidency and published by the Reuters news agency on Saturday.
The syrup was found to be made by New Delhi-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd, which recently shut down one of its factories in northern India as health officials there investigate.
The Gambia is also investigating the cause of death, and this week a new committee was appointed to investigate, according to the news from the presidency.
